O.C. MARKET PLACE COLLECTS MORE THAN A TON OF FOOD FOR FAMILIES IN NEED

12/23/2008 : Costa Mesa, CA --- A total of 2148 pounds of canned and dried food items was donated by shoppers at the Orange County Market Place, the swap meet at the O. C. Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa, in a four weekend canned food drive conducted to support South County Outreach. The nonprofit organization provides homeless prevention services to over 650 families per month and maintains a food pantry to assist those further in need.

“Every 100 pounds of food allows SCO (South County Outreach) to feed a family of four for about a week,” said Shawna Herren, the food drive coordinator for SCO. According to Herren the Market Place’s support will help feed 22 families. “That’s fantastic, “ she said.

Earlier this year the organization’s pantry was depleted and forced to close for several days.

“We feel this is what the spirit of giving during the holiday season is all about. We are happy to provide a forum in which we can help South County Outreach keep their cupboards full. “ said Jeffrey Teller, president of the O. C. Market Place.

The usual $2 admission fee ( 13 years and older) was waived every weekend from Nov. 29 through Dec. 21 with the donation of a canned food item or dried food product.

The need for food and volunteers for South County Outreach is ongoing. Anyone
interested in helping may contact them directly by calling 949-380-8144 or visiting their website: www.sco-oc.org.
