3/17/2009 : Costa Mesa, CA--The Animal Assistance League of Orange County and the Orange County Market Place, the weekend swap meet at the O. C. Fair & Event Center, will introduce its First Spring Pet Days, a two day event slated for Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5 It will be held during the swap meet’s regular operating hours from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is included in admission, which is $2 or free for kids 12 and under.
“After a successful turnout including many adoptions at our first Pet Days’ event last October, we felt it was a good idea to have one in the spring as well, “ said Jeff Teller, president of the Orange County Market Place. The Second Annual Fall Pet Days will be held the weekend of October 3 and 4.
The spring event will include several nonprofit organizations including specialty rescue centers and other pet related groups offering information on pet wellness, spaying and neutering, training tips, animal welfare and other subjects via guest speakers and demonstrations. Animals available for adoption will also be featured. Soccer Collies, an interactive show in which kids play a challenging game of soccer vs.an athletic Border Collie, will be performing on Saturday from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no charge to watch or participate in the shows. A free puppet show, presented both days by John Reed from the Santa Ana Friends for Animals and Santa Ana Police Department Animal Services, will entertain audiences while educating them about responsible pet ownership including the importance of spaying and neutering and dog bite prevention. Reed, a ventriloquist, uses a variety of cat and dog puppets. The Animal Assistance League of Orange County, a nonprofit no kill human society dedicated to aiding lost and homeless pets and the coordinating organization for the event, will participate with a large booth area both days showcasing cats and dogs available for adoption, an “ask the trainer” section with experts on varied pet related subjects, and general information and literature on pet population control, animal welfare and other issues. Guest speakers and demonstrations will be presented on stage throughout the day. Several specialty rescues will be on hand including the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County, the Southern California Dachshund Rescue, Southern California Bulldog Rescue, the Pet Rescue Center with several “Ask the Vet” opportunities, Greyhound Pets of America, It’s the Pits (rescue and education for Pit Bulls)-Saturday only, Roverlution (a Pit Bull rescue) and Little Bow Wow Rescue. Also, the California Domestic Ferret Education Alliance will be there to provide information about the domestic ferret as a companion animal and all the facts you need to know about their care, concerns and welfare. A variety of pet related services will be represented including the Pet Place Television Show, All Paws Dog Day Care of Fountain Valley, a day care, boarding, hospice, grooming and trainer facility; and At Home Cat Care, based in Irvine, a professional home cat care and reiki service. Unless otherwise indicated, all organizations will participate both days. The public may not bring their personal pets to this event, with the exception of therapy and seeing eye dogs. Admission to the swap meet, which is $2 for ages 13 and over, includes all Pet Days festivities. Children 12 and under are free. Free parking is also available. The Orange County Market Place, located at 88 Fair Drive in Costa Mesa, is held every Saturday and Sunday and features nearly 1,000 vendors offering a variety of goods and services.
