A THING CALLED LOVE
FANS WILL HAVE IT BURNING FOR THE KING AT 10TH ANNUAL ELVIS FESTIVAL

8/10/2009 : Costa Mesa, CA ---He’s been gone since August 16, 1977 but the fans of Elvis Presley will not allow his memory to die. The evidence will be strong when the 10th Annual Elvis Festival returns Sunday, August 23 at the Orange County Market Place, the weekend swap meet at the O. C. Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa. The event will run 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in conjunction with the swap meet activities, which begin at 7 a.m.

Tribute artists and impersonators will abound, whether they sing, look or simply wiggle their hips like the King of Rock and Roll. Elvis impersonator Kirk Wall, of Fullerton, who has been singing and performing like the “king of rock and roll” for nearly 30 years, which is nearly as long as Elvis Presley has been gone, will return as the host for the tenth time. A regular at the Continental Lounge in Fullerton and Azteca Restaurant in Garden Grove, Wall leans towards humor in his performances.

“Every Elvis impersonator has his own niche, “ said Wall. “There are young Elvises, movie Elvises, leather-jacket Elvises, Las Vegas Elvises and more. I’ve tried to make it a more funny Elvis with a lot of ad-libbing and playing with the crowd. Over the years, I think I’ve become more of a tribute to Elvis impersonators.”

Wall will be out directing traffic in the morning from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.; perform several Elvis medley sets at 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., Noon and 2:30 p.m.; present awards for the Crème de la King Karaoke Contest at 3:00 p.m. and officiate several contests including the Rock A Hula Hoop Contest at 1:00 p.m.

Kidding aside, tribute artist Alfred Sanchez of Hawthorne, who has notoriety as an Elvis tribute artist in the Philipines and Asia, claims he has the look of the king with the trademark Elvis hairdo and the hip-shaking gyration. Sanchez learned to imitate his idol by watching Elvis Presley’s performances and movies, and obtaining costumes that closely match the original ones the king wore. Sanchez performs at 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Other featured tribute artists for the day include 15 year old Joe Banuelos of Highland, CA, (inspired more by adult Elvis impersonators than the king himself,) performing at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. along with John Reade of Claremont at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. and Steve Williamson of Pomona at 12:30 p.m.

More Elvis imitating will go on during the Crème de la King Karaoke Contest at 11 a.m. in which contestants will vie for finalists spots to compete at Karaoke Fest 2009 held during the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona on September 5.

Surely to steal the spotlight from any human impersonator is Brutus, a five and-a-half-year-old bull mastiff, owned by Nancy Stevens of Yorba Linda , that dresses as Elvis with wig, glasses and cape, a costume he is mostly seen wearing during his therapy dog visits to local hospitals and senior centers. Brutus will be at Elvis Fest from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. posing for photos, and greeting visitors.

In addition they will conduct several contests including A Big Hunk O’ Pink Bubble Gum Blowing Contest at 11:15 a.m., Elvis Trivia Contest at 12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., Rock-A-Hula Hoop Contest at 1:00 p.m. and several raffles and drawings throughout the day.

Strolling about will be a 9’ 6” stilt walking Elvis and Joe Uncool, a small Elvis comedic magician and balloon artist.
