Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, to kick off National Pet Wellness Month on October 3 and 4. Held in conjunction with the regular swap meet activity from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, the event, presented by the Animal Assistance League of Orange County, will offer free admission with a donation of a can of cat or dog food to benefit the organization’s endeavors.

The Animal Assistance League of Orange County is a non-profit no kill humane society dedicated to aiding lost and homeless pets, helping people with pet related problems, promoting responsible pet-ownership and pet population control, and preventing cruelty to animals through educational programs.

Pet Days will feature a mini outdoor expo that will include several nonprofit organizations including specialty rescue centers and other pet related groups offering information on pet wellness, adoptions, spaying and neutering, training tips, animal welfare, holiday pet safety and other subjects via guest speakers and demonstrations.

In addition to the Animal Assistance League of Orange County’s booth other nonprofit groups attending include the Dalmatian Rescue of Southern California, Coastal German Shepherd and German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County, Southern California Dachshund Relief Inc., Pet Matchmaker Rescue as well as the Canine Angels Service Team which raises and trains exceptional dogs for special needs children.

Special “canine” guests dropping in include Chloe the Pit, a certified service and therapy dog owned by Gina Pettrow of Fountain Valley. As a team they promote the positive image and qualities of pit bulls.

Also, Brutus, a 5 ½ year old Bull Mastiff and certified therapy dog owned by Nancy Stevens of Yorba Linda, will make a special appearance. His size will be overshadowed by the fact he is a gentle giant who frequents hospitals, convalescent homes and assisted living centers and often dons an Elvis Presley jumpsuit.

Other canines will show off their skills in the Soccer Collies’ show on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is an interactive show in which kids play a challenging game of soccer vs. an athletic Border Collie.

The public may not bring their personal pets to this event, with the exception of therapy and seeing eye dogs.
